Volleyball Rules

The basics everyone should know before stepping on the court.

Court & net

The court is 18 x 9 m, split in two halves by a net. Net height is 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women; mixed games usually play at 2.35 m.

Players

Six players per side on court: three in the front row and three in the back row. Substitutions are allowed between rallies.

Scoring

Rally scoring: a point is scored on every rally. Sets go to 25 points (15 in a deciding set) and must be won by two points. Matches are best of three or five sets.

Serving

The serve is taken from behind the end line and may touch the net on the way over. The team winning the rally serves next; if it was the receiving team, it rotates first.

Rotation

After winning the serve back, players rotate one position clockwise. Back-row players may not attack the ball above net height from in front of the 3 m line.

Three touches

Each team may touch the ball up to three times before sending it back (block touches do not count). The same player cannot touch it twice in a row, except right after a block.

Common faults

Ball out, four touches, lifting or carrying the ball, double contact, touching the net during play, stepping fully over the centre line, and foot faults on the serve.

Court etiquette

Call the ball loudly, call your own faults honestly, avoid arguing line calls, and rotate new players in so everyone gets court time.
